The material

A laminate between two films

FiberTec® is a one-component ultraviolet (UV) light curable glass-reinforced polyester, manufactured in sheet form. A matrix of resin, fillers and E-type glass reinforcement is sandwiched between two nylon films.

It is a special low-styrene formulation that contains approximately one third of the styrene of the usual two-component liquid polyester resins. The films minimise emissions, make handling and shaping easier and can be marked out when transferring templates.

In its uncured state FiberTec is extremely soft and pliable. It can be moulded into any shape, wrapped around or laid on, and bonded to any clean surface.

  • Self-extinguishing once cured
  • Cures in daylight or under UV-A lamps

Application

From roll to cured laminate in four steps

FiberTec has a bottom side with a coloured film and a slightly rougher surface, and a top side with a transparent film.

  1. 01

    Cut

Cut the amount you need on a flat table, leaving the roll in its box. Close the box after use so daylight cannot cure the roll.

  2. 02

    Peel and place

Remove the bottom film: the sheet is now tacky and can be applied. The top film stays on and ends up on the outside.

  3. 03

    Shape and overlap

Mould the sheet around the object. Where sheets overlap, remove the top film first. Smooth seams and surfaces with transparent tape.

  4. 04

    Cure

Expose to daylight or UV lamps. The top film can be removed before or after curing, as required.

Important: areas that still need a FiberTec connection later must not cure yet. Mask them with UV-blocking tape, such as aluminium tape.

UV light sources

When daylight is not enough

FiberTec cures under UV-A light. Three types of artificial lighting are used; with any UV source, avoid looking into the lamp at close range for long periods.

  • UV tube light fitting

    80 W UV tube, 1500 mm

Relatively low power, so it is placed close to the material. No special precautions are needed at the work site.

  • UV spot lamp with cable

    300 W UV spot

High UV-A output with extremely low UV-B and UV-C. Useful for curing objects in awkward places. No special precautions are needed.

  • UV lamp mounted on a tripod

400 W UV lamp on tripod

Very high UV-A output, with very small amounts of UV-B and UV-C. Keep your distance from the beam: beyond 4 metres the intensity is negligible.

Fire and temperature

Self-extinguishing, halogen-free

FiberTec withstands temperatures from −50 °C to 100 °C and short peak loads up to 150 °C. It cannot be applied when the surface it is applied to is hotter than 50 °C.

FiberTec is a self-extinguishing material that does not support fire. Unlike normal polyester, no halogen gases are released during combustion.
